Affixes
An affix is a morpheme that is joined before or after the root word.
Prefix - joined before the root word which changes the word's meaning.
Suffix - joined after the root word which changes the word's meaning
Common Prefixes

pre- before preview (to view before)
un- not unhappy (not happy)
dis- not disagree (not agree)
re- again redo (do again)
mis- not misunderstood (not understood)
im- not impossible (not possible)
bi- two bicycle (two wheeled cycle)
Common Suffixes
Suffixes Meaning Example
-er doer teacher (do teach)
-able able recyclable (able to recycle)
-ous full of dangerous (full of danger)
-ness state of being darkness (being dark)
-ful full of truthful (full of truth)
-ly or -y kind happily (like happy)
-ment state of involvement (state of being involved)
Other types of affixes: infix, circumfix, simulfix and suprafix. These affixes are joined inside, on the outer edges, or replace phonemes in the root or stem.
